Since 2010, the internet has facilitated countless illicit drug transactions, when the year-old “Adamflowers” marketplace moved onto the darknet and rebranded as “The Farmer’s Market,” the first major darknet marketplace for drugs. In early 2011, Silk Road opened for business and darknet marketplaces proliferated across the web. With every round of busts, the marketplace operators, vendors, and buyers learn from the mistakes of others and find new ways to protect themselves from arrest or from being ripped off.
These markets host hundreds, or in some cases thousands, of people who sell drugs, commonly referred to as “vendors”. The dark web offers vital anonymity for vendors and buyers, who use cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin to process transactions. This prosecution is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigation. But one darknet drug dealer has told the BBC that law enforcement face an “impossible task” trying to close down such sites.

Court documents from the FBI said the site had just under a million registered users, but investigators said they did not know how many were active. Trump championed Ulbricht’s cause, joining libertarians who said the conviction was an example of government overreach. On Tuesday, he said he had called Ulbricht’s mother to inform her that he had granted a pardon to her son.
Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned Iran-based Behrouz Parsarad (Parsarad), the sole administrator of Nemesis, an online darknet marketplace, which was subject of an international law enforcement operation and was taken down in 2024. Prior to its takedown by law enforcement, narcotics traffickers and cybercriminals openly traded in illegal drugs and services on Nemesis, which was designed with built-in money laundering features. Nemesis had over 30,000 active users and 1,000 vendors and facilitated the sale of nearly $30 million worth of drugs around the world between 2021 and 2024, including to the United States. Today’s sanctions designation is OFAC’s first action as a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)-led interagency Joint Criminal Opioid and Darknet Enforcement (JCODE) Team.

Other risks, such as frauds perpetrated by customers and exit scams, were considered inevitable on the dark web, but also manageable. The men — Davit Avalyan, Hrant Gevorgyan, Hayk Grigoryan and Gurgen Nersesyan — pleaded not guilty on Wednesday. Agents also allegedly found large quantities of cash and suspected drugs while serving several search warrants, but the Justice Department declined to provide further details about those activities and seizures, saying the information was under seal.

During his four-week trial, Ulbricht acknowledged he created Silk Road, but his lawyers contended he had later handed off the website to others and was lured back toward its end to become the “fall guy” for its true operators. The Silk Road platform was shut down in 2013 with the arrest of Ulbricht. This page may contain sensitive or adult content that’s not for everyone. Of course meeting a dealer on the street isn’t the safest thing in the world but to me it seems better then trusting a random person or group on the dark web. The largest number of arrests were made in the U.S., which is in the grips of an overdose crisis.

According to 2019’s Global Drug Survey, the number of users who bought drugs on the darknet has doubled to nearly 28.6 percent since 2014. Meanwhile the 2019 “DM For Details” report on social media dealing by Volteface, a UK-based harm reduction organisation, revealed that 24 percent of young people had seen narcotics advertised on social media. Bearing in mind the relative newness of the technology – it’s only in the last ten years that we’ve had mobile internet and platforms like Instagram and Spotify – this is swift progress. Building on the successes of prior years’ operations, Operation RapTOR furthered global efforts to dismantle darknet marketplaces, resulting in the seizure of darknet infrastructure from Nemesis, Tor2Door, Bohemia, and Kingdom Markets. These actions provided investigators across the globe with invaluable leads and evidence, strengthening the ongoing fight against cybercrime and illicit activities on the darknet. On particularly invincible nights out, they bought drugs from sketchy men in dark corners of the club.

After a failed attempt at a culinary apprenticeship in 2013, the then-19-year-old teamed up with a darknet vendor who went by the name of RedBull supported by another named DummesSchwein to establish one Germany’s most lucrative darknet marketplaces. Since the demise of Wall Street and Dream, two new markets, Empire and Nightmare – which both opened over a year ago – have grown rapidly as users have migrated over from closed sites. Today, Empire has over 28,000 drug listings and Nightmare has over 60,000. In the summer of 2017, Dream market, the second-biggest at that time, had just 48,000 deals.

“The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponization of government against me. District Court for the Eastern District of New York unsealed a superseding indictment charging Volodymyr Viktorovich Tymoshchuk — also known as deadforz, Boba, msfv, and farnetwork… Prosecutors said he also solicited six murders-for-hire, including one against a former Silk Road employee, though they said no evidence existed that any killings were actually carried out.
They cast the venture as a libertarian experiment in free trade instead of criminal activity. “It may be that a person’s entire experience of using drugs has actually started through the darknet, and may indeed be confined to the darknet,” she explained. More people are buying their drugs on the dark web than any other time in recorded history, according to the findings of the latest Global Drug Survey (GDS). “Everyone above the age of 14 in Russia knows about kladmen and dead drops,” said a Russian lawyer specialising in the drug world.

Ulbricht, who holds an advanced degree in chemical engineering, at times used computers at internet cafes to access the servers running Silk Road and used the online alias “Dread Pirate Roberts” to conceal his own identity. The FBI said Ulbricht operated Silk Road on “what is known as ‘The Onion Router,’ or ‘Tor’ network, a special network of computers on the Internet … designed to conceal the true IP addresses of the computers on the network and thereby the identities of the networks’ users”. “Silk Road has emerged as the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the internet today,” FBI agent Christopher Tarbell said in a criminal complaint lodged by the agency in 2013. In any case, online dealers have long since arrived in popular culture.

But, undeterred, users simply moved on and got their wares from competitor marketplaces like Alphabay or Agora. On Telegram drug buyers and sellers chat on invite-only “channels”, some of which can have tens of thousands of active members, where anything from mescaline and “pink cocaine” to mephedrone and steroids, is available to buy. As with the dark web, there is always the risk of being scammed, although the reliability of individual sellers and their drugs are rated, reviewed and discussed. “Waste your resources on seizing petty websites because they know the use of darknet services is ever growing,” another user wrote. In addition to Empire Market’s more than 18,000 drug listings, another site called Nightmare Market now lists 28,000 drug products, along with the dark web’s usual assortment of stolen credit card numbers, counterfeits, and hacking tools. A new, Reddit-style forum site called Dread, hosted on a Tor hidden service, has already replaced the seized DeepDotWeb as a community hub, where users discuss which site to use when one is taken down by police or turns out to be run by scammers.
