One piece of anecdotal evidence he provides is an unexplainable coincidence during a Grateful Dead concert. Several speakers blew during what he describes as an intense energy spike that he and others felt. Despite the lack of hard evidence, he took this as a sign that there is a connection between the physical world and the subjective experiences we have in our minds. Scully has said that Don Douglas, a childhood friend, introduced him to psychedelics by encouraging him to read Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu and Island and The Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley. He says that these books, among others, prompted him to embark on his journey to explore LSD and the human mind.

The Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs had been watching the pair, and arrested 23-year-old Scully in 1969 for a lab he’d started in Colorado prior to meeting Sand. Here’s where true crime fans might perk up, as the pair viewed the cops’ intervention in characteristically divergent ways – which had disastrous consequences. The duo, vital to the rise and fall of LSD in the 1960s, was a kind of alternative odd – if Oscar and Felix did a lot of mind-altering substances. Now they’re the subjects of a new documentary, The Sunshine Makers, which chronicles how they were responsible for the production and distribution of the highly popular Orange Sunshine brand of acid.

I’m thrilled to see that the research is moving ahead and I hope it accelerates. I think that there are many legitimate medical uses for psychedelics and I hope there is something developed for healthy people to be able to use psychedelics under whatever supervision might be required for it to be done legitimately. Under the supervision of a licensed therapist or whatever the government might require.

“Instead of dropping out of society, they created their own version of it”, says Nicholas Schou, author of a book on the Brotherhood. But they were forced to abandon the settlement after it burned down due to a fire at their makeshift church. The Brotherhood of Eternal Love emerged from the hippie culture of ‘60s California – but their ambitions were global.

How Reading Can Help Us Cope With Death
It’s an important homecoming, in no small part because New Zealand’s regulatory landscape is somewhat friendlier to researchers wanting to work with “high-risk” class-A drugs like methamphetamine, cocaine, and, yes, LSD. However, another common culprit for fake LSD, as well as fake ALD-52, called 25I-NBOMe (or other NBOMe compounds), are much more problematic. NBOMe’s (N-bombs) are psychoactive in similar doses as lysergamides, but they carry a significantly higher risk for side effects and death. Unlike other drugs, the dose of lysergamides is so small that adulteration with drugs like fentanyl, which are extremely dangerous, is minimized.

Both compounds are primarily converted to LSD, with a few secondary metabolites — none of which have been found to have harmful effects. In Germany, ALD-52 is illegal under the NpSG (New Psychoactive Substances Act). The same situation is found in Austria, Latvia, Poland, and other European countries. For example, neither Canada nor Denmark specifically names ALD-52 as illegal, and neither country bans lysergamides nor related analogs. However, despite these findings, there have not been any human trials with this substance, so the safety of ALD-52 remains theoretical at the present moment. There hasn’t been much research on ALD-52, despite how long it’s been around.
Seeking privacy, some of the Brotherhood moved inland to a ranch near Idyllwild, to create a couples-only commune led by Leary, who declared that he and Griggs were ‘agents of God’, born to lead ‘a new breed’. Then, at the age of 25, Griggs died of an overdose of psilocybin crystals. The Brotherhood responded by redoubling their commitment, and expanded their operations to produce 10kg of LSD – approximately 100 million doses.
Imaging analyses therefore focused on changes in the connectivity profile of this particular structure. Results revealed increased PHC-visual cortex (VC) functional connectivity and PHC to VC information flow in the interaction between music and LSD. This latter result correlated positively with ratings of enhanced eyes-closed visual imagery, including imagery of an autobiographical nature. These findings suggest a plausible mechanism by which LSD works in combination with music listening to enhance certain subjective experiences that may be useful in a therapeutic context.
Film Review: ‘Orange Sunshine’
They earned the name “windowpane” because, as rumor has it, underground chemists or distributors used fluorescent light diffusers as molds for gel tabs. Windowpane acid can come in flat sheets, like the colored gels that fit over theatre stage lights to change the tone of the scene, pyramid-shaped squares. This particular LSD preparation was perhaps more popular in the 1980s and 90s than it is now.
Nicholas Sand’s First Psychedelic Experience & Philosophy
Right after that I had a lab accident where I got really stoned and I had a very bad trip and thought the Feds were in the trees outside. And I thought, “I’m done.” I hoped that somebody would keep doing it — but I couldn’t keep doing it. In regard to how I felt physiologically — I got high in the lab, but because you get high all the time you build up a tolerance very rapidly. You don’t even realize that you’re altered unless you talk with someone who isn’t stoned, then you realize that you really are stoned. So that takes us to Windsor in California, where we made Orange Sunshine.
What Does ALD-52 Feel Like?
- Another source is lysergic acid amide (LSA), a similar psychedelic compound that is naturally found in the seeds of morning glory and Hawaiian baby woodrose plants.
- Part of the reason for this is because it’s not well known; most people are familiar with LSD but don’t yet know there’s a whole category of related compounds offering similar effects (lysergamide psychedelics).
- I see it as a vast labyrinth with high walls sealing off the many directives created by our personal history.
- While Orange Sunshine may not be widely available yet, its impact on public perception is significant, potentially leading to more inclusive mental health treatment options.
(They claim the ultimate goal was to give away LSD for free.) Nevertheless, their efforts inevitably attracted unwanted attention. President Lyndon B. Johnson, then President Nixon and Gov. Reagan, prioritized fighting a “drug scourge” that no longer affected just society’s fringe, but also middle-of-the-road taxpayers’ own children. ALD-52 is a bit of a fringe psychedelic, which means it’s almost never explicitly mentioned on the lists of controlled substances for most countries.
ALD-52’s structure contains four rings, a bicyclic hexahydroindole fused to a bicyclic quinoline group. ALD-52 was originally discovered by Albert Hofmann in his study of LSD analogs,1 but it did not enter mainstream awareness until the 1960s through Western youth counterculture. ALD-52 gained public notoriety when it was supposedly distributed as LSD in the 1960s under the now-famous name “Orange Sunshine.” This was later disproven (see section below).
Other Books Related To LSD Manufacturing

A death fitting of a Tibetan Rinoche, it was classic Nick Sand to the end. There you have it; a crazy list of 50 street names for the popular drug LSD. Remember that while many of these street names are fun and make the drug seem “safe,” this is not always the case.
A recipe for preparing “bananadine” from the baked scrapings of banana peels circulated at festivals. The Food and Drug Administration performed scientific experiments. “A laboratory apparatus ‘smoked’ banana peels for three weeks and never did get high,” the agency wrote in a press release. The New York Times Magazine called banana scrapings a mild kick.

Sand even says he managed to get LSD in the prison food, although the documentary doesn’t delve much into how. In the documentary, directed by Cosmo Feilding Mellen and now available on demand, both express that they ardently believed (and, in Sand’s case, at least, still believe) that LSD could save the world. “My first experience with taking acid changed everything,” Sand says at the start of the film.
In this context, music is considered to be a key element in the therapeutic model; working in synergy with the drug to evoke therapeutically meaningful thoughts, emotions and imagery. The underlying mechanisms involved in this process have, however, never been formally investigated. Here we studied the interaction between LSD and music-listening on eyes-closed imagery by means of a placebo-controlled, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. Twelve healthy volunteers received intravenously administered LSD (75 ug) and, on a separate occasion, placebo, before being scanned under eyes-closed resting conditions with and without music-listening. The parahippocampal cortex (PHC) has previously been linked with (1) music-evoked emotion, (2) the action of psychedelics, and (3) mental imagery.
